THE HENDERSON PROJECT
A DR. WHO SCRIPT
By Huw Davies and Paul Johnson
EPISODE 1
FX GMT time signal
Radio Announcer
This is
Dermot Shaunessy and this is the Today Programme on Radio 4. The
Government today have announced new changes to the tax laws and a
volcano has errupted in the South Pacific, but first the news, today
read by Timothy Smythe.
Smythe
The Henderson
Project is continuing to attract controversy. Today, the leader of
the Opposition called it morally unsound and suggested that those
responsible may be putting pressure on the NHS to attract more
volunteers. The executive in charge, Mr Gryte-Phype Moriarty of
Shelfish Laboratories has just given us this press release.
Moriarty
A number of
allegations have been made against our organisation and in particular
against Professor Henderson's project. This has been seen by both
the Prime Minister and his opposite memberr in the house today. I
wish to state that these allegations are ALL unfounded. At no time
has there or will be any form of harrasment or financial reward
imposed on any of the medical profession.
It should be said however,
that there have been a great number of break throughs in the
treatments of both cardiac and cerebal diseases due to this research
which has meant in future that diseaeses such as Cardiac Thrombosis
and Altzheimer's disease will be problems no more.
Smythe
Opposition groups
are calling for an independant investigation into why volunteers who
have had the Henderson treatment have all come out "changed
people".
In other news, the police
are still at a loss over the recent electronic factory break ins and
a number of exhibits from the last South Pole expedition which have
also gone missing. A spokesman today said that they had no leads at
present.
GRAMS Dr. Who theme music.....
FX Hospital noises, bleepers (carry on throughout hospital part until otherwise
indicated, though muted)
FX Chimes
P.A.
Would Doctor Forester please contact extension 3501 please.
FX Chimes
P.A.
Would Doctor Forester please contact extension 3501 please.
FX Chimes, telephone rings (4 rings)
Receptionist
Nurses
station, Ward B4. No. No. No. The xrays have'nt yet arrived. Yes.
No. Sorry I could not be any more help.
FX Papers shuffling, footsteps approach, pass
Receptionist
(calls) Dr. Cartwright. Dr. Cartwright.
FX Footsteps stop, turns, comes back.
Receptionsist
You have a
memo here from Jacobson. Something about fiscal prudence, another
about the Henderson thing and
Cartwright
(interupts) Any
test results or anything important?. (Irate) Don't these jumped up
Yuppies think I have anything better to do? - this is a hospital for
Christ's sake, not a research centre for human guinea pigs.
Receptionist
You're a bit tetchy this morning! Bad night was it?.
Cartwright
(apologetically)
No, not really. I'm sorry, it's just all these beurocrats making
mine and other Doctors lives a mess. Take Jacobson, he's onto a
right earner. Sixty four K a year, plus what he gets from Shelfish.
Receptionist
They're the mob behind the Henderson thing aren't they?.
Cartwright
They're the
Charlies. Apparently Jacobson was one of Henderson's students
before he got mixed up with Shelfish. While he doesn't get anything
from Shelfish, he is still pushing us to get volunteers for
(sininsterly) treatment.
Receptionist
You make it sound dead sinister. Stop it, your making my skin crawl.
Cartwright
And what's worse is what the people who come out are like.
Receptionist
I haven't noticed any problems.
Cartwright
No problems. Remember Jake Simons, back case a few months ago?
Receptionist
Yeah, go on.
Cartwright
Went there, came back, no problems. When I checked his back, he became very
defensive and clouted me one.
Receptionist
That shouldn't
have mattered much, he was about as strong as a wet paper bag!
(giggles)
Cartwright
In that case, he
should get a patent on the bags. He broke one of my ribs and my nose,
then left. Of course, I complained to Jacobson, but he just said that
it was my own fault and what did I expect? Afterall, I was the one
who had been treating him since his accident. He probably thought I
was going to reinjure him.
Receptionist
Fancy.
FX Phone rings
Receptionist
'Scuse me. Got to answer the phone.
FX Phone stops ringing, phone gets picked up.
Receptionist
Nurses
station, ward B4. Oh hello 'arry. What am I doing to night?, hold
on, Dr. Cartwright, I'll chase up those results and don't worry
about the project, it's not that bad!. Just relax and try not to
get so worked up!.
Cartwright
Thanks
FX Walks away.
Receptionist
Sorry about
that 'arry. Look, I can't talk. It's Cartwright, he's getting
suspicious. We must act soon or he might find something out.
FX Football match, cheers,
hooters etc. A goal is scored, massive cheer!.
Rachel
Doctor? Doctor? Did you see that?
Doctor
See what Rachel?
Rachel
That goal.
Doctor
No, I was trying to
figure something out. My dimensional stabiliser circuit is playing up
again. I was nearly squashed today when it failed.
Rachel
How?
Doctor
Visiting the toilet.
Can we get out of here, all this running about is making me feel
uneasy. It's like the time I was on Mechanos. Everything was
rushing about either eating or being eaten. I just don't want to be
eaten!!
Rachel
But Doctor, there's
only another five minutes until full time. And it is a cup match.
Doctor
In that case, I'm off to the gents.
Rachel
That funny little man!.
FX Cheers etc muffled.
Doctor
Ah, the toilets.
This looks to be a simple enough device. No tranducer powered
syncronisers to worry about, no antimatter protection beams or even
multi neuron identifiers, just a handle. Turn and push.
FX Handle turning, door
creaks open. Steps to another door, opens, closes, slides lock
across, zip undoes, Doctor sighs.
Doctor
A newspaper, how
considerate. (reads) How odd. Says here that Pliscies have been
broken into again, but only a few thyristors and the odd chip have
gone missing. Police are baffled. How odd. It goes on to say that it
has been mostly small radio spare shops which have been hit and that
is the only (turns page) Damn. Some swine has messed up the rest. Oh
well.
FX Toilet flushed, opens door, washes hands, goes back to the match.
P.A.
Would the Doctor
please go to the front of the stadium. His niece Rachel is waiting
for him.
Doctor
Niece? Niece?. Were does that girl get her ideas from!
GRAMS Sinister riff from theme music (used in Paradise of Death/N Space etc)
FX Buzzer
Intercom
Proffersor Henderson, a Dr. Jacobson on line one for you.
Henderson
Patch him through Jane.
FX Buzzer, phone, picked up.
(NOTE Jacobson
is on the phone, therefore, not a real voice.)
Henderson
Frank, what can I do you for?
Jacobson
James, we may have
some trouble at the hospital. A few of the staff are getting
suspicious when the patients come back with increased strength. What
are you doing with them?
Henderson
Curing them my dear fellow, just curing them.
Jacobson
I don't know how
you are doing it, but you are certainly raising a few eyebrows.
Henderson
Really Frank, you
do worry so. Personally, I don't understand why you have to have
them re-examined. Is it not enough to tell you that they are fine?
Jacobson
It is for me. My collegues are a different matter.
Henderson
Then allay their
suspicions. Authorise a decree or some other red taped rubbish. I
don't care how, just get them off my back.
Jacobson
(resigned) Alright, leave it to me.
FX Phone clicks. Buzzer
Henderson
Jane, my dear.
Could you get me another cup of tea. I find that man, most trying.
Intercom
Yes Sir. Anything else?
Henderson
No. No. Wait,
yes. No more calls for the next half hour, excepting for my tea.
Anybody wanting me, I am out of the office.
Intercom
Okay.
FX Heavy goods noises, docks, trains.
Guard 1
Check
Guard 2
Check?
Guard 1
You heard, check. Your King is in check.
Guard 2
Yeah, easily sorted. King's knight 4
FX Heavy doors creak open. HGV reversing into building.
Guard 1
Pawn to knight 4, check.
FX Engine stops, cab door opens, jumps to floor, steps approach, slowly
Guard 2
Rook to bishops 3.
Driver
Who's in charge here?
Guard 2
You'll want the gaffer, but he's not here at the moment.
Guard 1
What's up then mate?
Driver
Got a consignment of crates for Selfish Products. Want them anywhere?
Guard 2
Leave them over there, we'll move them in a minute.
Driver
Okay, sign this. Thanks
FX Steps to distance, HGV starts, short drive, engine idles, door crane drops,
rises, HGV goes.
Guard 2
Swine, he hasn't shut the door. I'll go.
FX Steps to distance, door closes. Steps to fore.
Guard 2
Let's go and shift those crates.
Guard 1
I'll do it, you lost after all! (laughs)
Guard 1
Wonder what's in 'em.
Guard 2
Probably dead bodies or stolen treasures or stuff
Guard 1
Could be - it's 'eavy enough
FX Dragging noises.
Guard 1
(grunts, groans) Jim, come and give us a hand shiftin' it then.
Guard 2
Alright.
FX Heavy footsteps. Stops
Guards 1 & 2
(grunts, groans) (shifting noises)
Guard 2
You're right.
This is bloody heavy. On the count of 3, lift. One, two, three, (strained)
lift.
Guard 1
(quickly, out of breath) Shift it to the rest of their stuff.
FX Fast heavy steps
Guard 2
(out of breath) Phew! I could do with a drink.
Guard 1
So could I. Come on, my turn to brew up.
FX Scuffling.
Guard 1
(quiet) Jim, what was that?
Guard 2
(quiet) Dunno, came from over by the Shelfish crates.
Guard 1
(quiet) Go an have a look then, I'm making the drinks.
Guard 2
(quiet) No chance. I went last time.
Guard 1
Go on, it might be one of your bodies.
Guard 1 & 2
(laughs)
Guard 1
Go on then!
FX Steps to the distance. Stops
Guard 2
(distant) Any one there?. I know you're there, come out.
Guard 1
Anything?
Guard 2
No. Nothing. Wait a mo, there is something there.
Guard 1
Well?
Guard 2
Shurrup.
FX Laser shot (build up power, loud shot, fade off). Scream.
Guard 1
Jim? Jim?. You alright?. (shouts) Jim!
FX Heavy steps coming to the fore
Guard 1
Jim is that you?.
FX Steps continue. Stop
Guard 1
What the he (interupted)? Who are you? What on earth are you?
Voice
The new rulers.
FX Another laser shot. Body falls to the floor.
GRAMS Eiree music.
FX Shop door rings.
Waiter
Yes Sir?
Doctor
Two glasses of water please.
Waiter
(disgusted) Just water?
Doctor
Yes. Just water, clean fresh water.
Waiter
Water? Just water?
Doctor
Yes. Water. Formula,
H-2-O : conductivity at 25 degrees Celcius, 1.3 Siemens per meter, a
polar solvent. (annoyed) Yes, just water.
FX 2 sets of feet. Stop. Chairs pulled.
Rachel
So what did you think about the match?
Doctor
Is that all you go
on about?. I am nearly killed by the dimensional stabiliser and all
you can go on about is a primitive game twixt two teams, the object
of which is to get a spheroid into a net through skill, judgement and
not to mention, a few dodgy manouvers!.
Rachel
Oh
Doctor
Yes "oh". I have more urgent things to worry about.
Rachel
Your dimensions thingy
Doctor
Yes, but not just that. This Henderson Project.
FX Footsteps fade in. Stops.
Waiter
Your waters Sir. And bill.
FX Footsteps fade out.
Doctor
Yes. The Henderson
project. I don't understand it. Earth scientists don't discover
the cures for most of the ailments until 2163AD, just in time for the
Daleks attempt at invasion.
Rachel
Daleks?
Doctor
Yes, horrid machines
created in the distant future by Davros. They try and mine out the
core of the Earth and shift it back to were Skaro was.
Rachel
Was?
Doctor
Yes, Davros destroyed it in 1963.
Rachel
I thought you said they were from the future.
Doctor
I did. Time plays tricks like that you know!. (laughs)
Rachel
About this Henderson thing. I wouldn't worry about it.
Doctor
Why not?
Rachel
It's probably just
some overhyped thing by some jumped up loony company trying to cash
in on misfortune.
Doctor
Maybe. Look, it's almost 5pm, switch on the radio.
FX Radio crackles into life.
Announcer
And now on Radio 5 Live, the news.
Newsreader
Good evening.
First tonight, two security guards have been found horrifically murdered in
a north London warehouse today. The injuries to the men look as if
they have been caught in a blast but without external damage. The
police are treating this suspiciously as none of the normal terrorist
groups have claimed responsisibilty and no other damage has been
caused.
St. Jamesbrook hospital
today announced a new partnership with Shelfish Laboratories. The
deal, worth 3.5 million pounds over two years is to help in the
development of the Henderson Project. Hospital chief, Doctor Francis
Jacobson, has said that this will be a great step forward.
Cartwright
A great step forward indeed.
FX Radio switched off. Door opens, steps in. Stops
Jacobson
....so you'll agree.
Cartwright
(angrily) Agree to what?
Jacobson
Nothing. I must be going now Mrs Jones. Farewell.
FX Steps to distance, door open and close.
Mrs Jones
Byee love. Hello Dr. Cartwright. Any news for me?
Cartwright
Yes, your test results are back.
Mrs Jones
(pensive) And?
Cartwright
Not good. I'm sorry.
Mrs Jones
How long do you think I've got?
Cartwright
Six months tops.
Mrs Jones
(sadly) No hope then.
Cartwright
(quietly) None.
I'm afraid that you'll get gradually more and more tired from
here on in.
Mrs Jones
Dr. Jacobson was
telling me about this Henderson Project. Couldn't that help? He
reckons that this was just the sort of ailment that they are
currently researching into.
Cartwright
I don't know
about that. Personally, I think that the cures they give are not
pleasant and quite un-ethical.
Mrs Jones
You suprise me.
I'd have thought that anything to advance medicine would have been
good. Anyway, I don't see an alternative. I have six months to
live, this is a way out. A chance for a few more months of life. Get
me the forms and I'll sign up. Dr. Jacobson says that there is
money for research volunteers.
Cartwright
Sounds more like
for guinea pigs if you ask me. I shall get the forms for you. The
last I heard was that you filled in the forms and someone from the
lab picks you up the same day.
Mrs Jones
Thank you Doctor.
FX Steps walking away, door open and close.
FX Cars and traffic.
Rachel
(out of breath) Doctor, Doctor, hold on!
FX Running, slows to a brisk walk. This walking effect should be kept up until
otherwise indicated.
Rachel
(out of breath, but getting it back) Now what are you up to?
Doctor
I'm going to that
warehouse. Two deaths by what looks to be a bomb blast, but no
evidence of an explosion. There is something not right there.
Rachel
Sounds a bit dangerous to me.
Doctor
It could well be.
The only thing that can kill like that would be a focused energy beam
of some description.
Rachel
Wouldn't that be a bit dangerous?
Doctor
What, the energy beam?. No, not if you are the one fireing it. Perfectly safe
then. It's if you're the one who gets hit by it that you need to worry!.
Rachel
Would it kill?
Doctor
(getting irritated)
Yes. Now stop asking questions about focused energy weapons. It's
only the Daleks who have that sort of technology, and so far, the
TARDIS has not give any sort of mention to them. Now shush, we have
arrived.
FX Footsteps stop. Small
door creaks open. Steps enter. Voices now have a slight echo.
Doctor
Hello, anyone here?
Rachel
Doctor, should we be in here?
Doctor
(irritated) Yes, no,
probably not, no, who cares? There's nothing here except for us,
those two bodies over there and a load of very large crates.
Rachel
And a couple of large rats, yeck!
FX Footsteps moving about.
Doctor
I'm going over to
the bodies, you amuse yourself in whatever way you wish. Just
(stresses) be careful.
FX Two steps of steps, one going to fore, the other to distance.
Doctor
(to self) I don't
understand this. They have been hit by something, but what?
FX Steps (only a few). Stops
Doctor
Chess? Ha. A game of inspired logic.
Rachel
(calls) You what Doctor?
Doctor
(calls) I said Chess.
Rachel
(calls) What about it?
Doctor
(calls) A game of pure logic. I remember one time....
GRAMS Build up sinister music over the next few lines.
Rachel
(screams) Doctor. Come over here - quickly.
FX Running to distance then to fore.
Doctor
What is it? What's the matter?
Rachel
(upset) There, behind the box.
Doctor
An arm?
Rachel
(crying) Oh Doctor, let's get out of here.
Doctor
No wait, there is something else here.
FX Boxes moving.
Doctor
The boxes say "Property of Shelfish". I wonder what's in them?
GRAMS Music really building up
FX Wooden crate being opened.
Doctor
(suprised) Oh my giddy aunt.
FX BIG crash of falling boxes.
Rachel
Doctor? What is it?
Doctor
A cyberman. When I say run, make like the wind.
FX Feet turning.
Rachel
(screams) Another one.
Cyberman
Doctor. You are expected. Follow me. Resistance is useless.
Doctor
(shouts) RUN
GRAMS Fast suspense music
FX Running
Cyberman Fire.
FX Laser build up, explodes as shot. Body falls to the ground.
Rachel
(screams) Doctor? Doctor?. Get up.
Cyberman
Now the girl.
FX Laser build up
Rachel
(screams) NO!
FX Explodes as shot.
GRAMS (at same time as shot is heard) Outro music.

Fire at will. Aim for the heads. Don't touch the girl. We need her, and

FX Shots, rockets, general melee!.
Cyberman
Your weapons cannot harm us.
Major
No?. Get out the special weapons.
FX Cases being opened. Guns being taken out.
Cyberman
No weapon you have will even scrape us.
Major
Load weapons.
Cyberman
To try is futile. We will destroy you. Fire at will
Major
(shouts) FIRE!.
FX Lasers going off, the odd scream with body thud. Single shot. Simple tinkle

Cybermen
(scream in agony).
Cyberman
Retreat. They have gold. All cybermen retreat.
FX Heavy steps turning sluggishly. Warp.
Major
Corporal, get the girl and see to the man.
Corporal
Sir. You two, follow me. You and you, get the girl.

Rachel
(sobbing) What have they done to the Doctor? They shot and he fell. What have
they done?
Major
Don't worry miss. He's going to be alright.
Major
(quietly) Get her in the truck. Give her a cup of tea or something. I'll call
base.
Corporal
Sir.
FX Climbing into truck.
Major
Greyhound to trap one. Greyhound to trap one. Do you receive me?
FX Static
Major
Greyhound to trap one. Come in trap one.
FX Static, bustling.
Doctor
You'll never get through in here. To much kinetic disturbance. Try outside.
Major
(shocked) You!. You're supposed to be back there.
Doctor
(cheery)
I know. I could never resist giving advice to the military. Their
minds are so one tracked, it would make a Politico flinch!.
Major
What do you know?
Doctor
More than I could ever tell. Now are we getting out of here or what?
Major
Alright. (shouts) Move out.
FX Vans starting, drives off.
FX Hospital noises. Tannoys etc.
Cartwright
There are the forms Mrs Jones. I must ask you a few questions before you
sign through.
Mrs Jones
Go ahead.
Cartwright
Do you have any internal metals?. The likes of false hips, bone splints
and the such.
Mrs Jones
No.
Cartwright
(to self) No. (normal) Have any of your family either worked in or around
a nuclear installation?
Mrs Jones
Does a tin mine count?
Cartwright
I don't think so.
Mrs Jones
In that case, no.
Cartwright
Just jot that down, no. Finally, have you ever had any dental surgery
involving either gold or any other precious metal?
Mrs Jones
Not as far as I know. These are silly questions aren't they?
Cartwright
The whole thing, Mrs Jones, could be considered silly. Anyway, it is you
choice. Just sign here. (pause) Thanks.
Mrs Jones
What'll happen now?
Cartwright
It'll be processed. You'll be taken to the Shelfish place within the
hour.
Mrs Jones
(suprised) That quickly?
Cartwright
(depressed) That quickly.
FX Door opens and closes. A click.
Jacobson
That Cartwright is suspicious. He must be dealt with.
FX Intercom buzzer
Jacobson
Miss Forster?
Intercom
Yes, Doctor Jacobson?
Jacobson
Could you send for Doctor Cartwright please?
Intercom
Certainly.
Jacobson
Thank you.
FX Intercom buzzer, different pitch.
Background
(quiet PA) Doctor Cartwright to see Dr. Jacobson. Doctor Cartwright to
Doctor Jacobson's office.
Jacobson
Now to stop him.
FX Phone picked up, phone number dialled.
Jacobson
It's Jacobson. I have two for today. A Mrs. Jones and another.
Voice
(semi cyber) Has the paper work been done?
Jacobson
Don't worry about that. They'll be ready in a minute.
FX Phone replaced.
GRAMS Atmosphere music, pace build up.
FX Door knock, open, close. Steps in.
Cartwright

FX Crackle of static x 2
GRAMS All music stops suddenly.
Jacobson
Listen to me. You will sit down and say nothing.
FX Chair scraped.
Jacobson
In a minute, you will be taken from here to Shelfish. There, you will
assist in all that is asked of you. Do you understand?
Cartwright
(monotoned) I understand.
Jacobson
There, you will ask nothing and say nothing other than to a direct question.
To any externals, when questioned, you answer - no comment. Do you
understand?
Cartwright
(monotoned) I understand.
Jacobson
Now wait here. I'll be back in a moment.
FX Heavy chair scrapes. Steps, door opens and shuts.
Jacobson
Miss Forster. When the men from Shelfish arrive, tell them that the woman
in room 3, Ward B4, Mrs Jones and Doctor Cartwright are to be taken.
Miss Forster
(taken aback) Doctor Cartwright?
Jacobson
Yes. He has (thinks) volunteered to help the researchers there as part of
our multi-million pound deal with them.
Miss Forster
Where should I say you are, if they ask?
Jacobson
I'll be at lunch with the Director of Finance.
FX Steps to fade.
Miss Forster
Okay. (calls) Have a good lunch!.
FX Truck on a road.
Major
So what were they back there?
Doctor
(dismissive) Them, nothing.
Major
Didn't much look like nothing to me. Our weapons had no effect on them.
Bazookas, grenades, armour rounds - nothing.
Doctor
They wouldn't.
Major
(laughingly) Those special weapon things did though. Stopped them in their
tracks.
Doctor
They would.
Major
Contain some sort of chemical weapon, did it?
Doctor
You could say that. (a tad annoyed) Were are we going?
Major
R.T.U.
Doctor
To unit?. Look just who are you?
Major
I'm Major Strife, part of the United Nations
Doctor
(happy) Inteligence Taskforce. Well I never. Who sent you?
Major
(suprised) Why, the Brigadier did!.
Doctor
Good old Lethbridge Stewart.
Major
Lethbridge Stewart passed away two weeks ago. This is Brigadier Cyril
Lemmington.
Doctor
Well, I'll be glad to see him when we get there.
Major
That shouldn't be to long. Another five minutes or so
FX Truck fades to distance. Space ship workshop. Wubbing noise
Cyber 1
Has the primitive Cyberman responded yet?
Cyber 2
No. I have tried power up to ratio 3
Cyber 1
Try ratio 3.6
Cyber 2
I understand. Power up.
FX Wubbing noise increases.
Cyber 2
Ratio 3.6 and holding.
(NOTE
The Cyber Mondasians are the types from Tenth Planet. They require
different voices. Script denoted as CM
x.)
CM
What is happening? Who are you? What are you doing?
Cyber 1
It is responding. Should I answer the questions?
Cyber 2
No. It would not serve any purpose at the present time. Keep it alive.
Cyber 3
(intercom) How are the experiments progressing?
Cyber 1
The Mondasian is recovering. We have life signals from all cerebal cortexes.
Some of the motor functions are lost.
Cyber 3
(intercom) And the humans?
Cyber 2
They are converting well.
Cyber 3
(intercom) We have
just had news from Earth. The Doctor was there. Our troops shot him
before being attacked by forces.
Cyber 1
Their primitive weaponary can not harm us.
Cyber 3
(intercom) They had glitter guns.
Cyber 2
Gold.
Cyber 1
That will soon be of no threat. Our protectors are due for testing soon.
Cyber 3
(intercom) Good. Then the Earth shall be our new Mondas and all mankind will be
as us - if they like it or not.
Cyber 1
What is to be done with the Mondasian?
Cyber 3
(intercom) I will come down and see to it myself. Out.
CM
You are not like us, but you act like us. Are you us?
Cyber 1
It is as if it was confused. We are the Cybermen.
FX Noises fade. Fade into
truck on gravel path. Brakes scream to a halt *with gravel!*. Many
feet running. Near door opens. Three sets of feet jump onto gravel.
FX Feet walking on gravel.
Doctor
(sad) Old Lethbridge Stewart gone. A sad loss. How did it happen?
Major
Old age. Come on. Through here.
FX Walking stops. Door opens, walk through, door closes. Walking along corridor
(echos)
Rachel
Doctor, what happened to you back there?
Doctor
This.
Rachel
A watch?
Doctor
Not quite. Watch what happens when I press the top switch.
FX Faint buzz
Rachel
Nothing's happened.
Doctor
Try and touch me.
FX Spark
Rachel
(shocked) Ouch!.
Doctor
Exactly, the Cyberweapon just bounced off me. I fell to the ground to let our
friends in.
Rachel
How did you know they were coming?
Doctor
I didn't.
Rachel
(amazed) What!?!. You went there on the off chance?
Doctor
Yes. I knew they
would arrive after hearing that news broadcast about the security
guards who were killed and not externally touched.
Major
A bit stupid if you ask me. Very dangerous.
Doctor
(annoyed) Dangerous?
Dangerous!. Of course it was dangerous. Everything is dangerous.
Breathing is dangerous, walking is dangerous - you get the idea -
life is dangerous!!.
Major
(calm) Quite. Wait here.
FX Steps to door (close). Knocks. Opens, closes door.
Rachel
Who are these people?
Doctor
Friends.
Rachel
Yes, but who are they?
Doctor
UNIT are a bunch of
people who have nothing better to do than march around looking at the
skies and when something they don't know about or expect comes up
to them, they try and blow it out of existance. Childish really.
Rachel
They sound like normal militaria to me.
Doctor
They are. Predictable to the last. That's why I knew they would appear sooner
or later.
FX Door opens, close. Steps (few)
Major
The Brigadier will see you now.
Rachel
Thanks
FX Steps. Door opens, closes. Hospital noises.
Man
Is this Ward B4?
Receptionist
Yes. You from Shelfish?
Man
That's right luv. Which ones Jones?
Receptionist
Second on the left. Here's her papers.
FX Rustle of paper
Man
(to self) 48 (to receptionist) A bit old. Still, ours not to reason why
Man and Receptionist
(coldly, together, monotoned) Ours but to do or die.
GRAMS Cold, sinister note.
FX Steps away, door open, enter, close.
Man
Mrs Jones?
Mrs Jones
That's me. You from Shelfish?
Man
Sure am!. If you'd like to sit in this chair, I'll wheel you out of this place
to the lab where you will get a whole new lease of life.
Mrs Jones
(pleased) Lovely.
FX Getting out of bed. Few
unsteady steps to chair, "whumph" from cushions as she
sits.
Man
Comfortable?. The let's go.
FX Steps, Door opens
Brigadier
Close the door, Doctor.
FX Door closing.
Brigadier
We thought you'd
be somewhere behind all this mess. Now what is it today?. Yeti in the
undergrowth, another dinosaur invasion or could it be the Orkrons
again? (laughs)
Doctor
No. None of them. I
really would have thought that after all of this time, and the
experience old Lethbridge Stewart would have imparted upon you, would
make you realise that mockery will cost lives. (darkly) To be more
exact, yours.
Rachel
Don't mock the Doctor. He knows a thing or two.
Brigadier
I know. We have the files. Early 1970 to 1977 I believe. It looks to me like
Lethbridge Stewart had a whale of a time in your elaborate hoaxes.
Doctor
(very annoyed) Elaborate hoaxes?!
Brigadier
Yes, hoaxes. Who
ever would believe things suchs as plastic people from another
planet? The abominable snowmen in England? And the utterly ridiculous
story of people from the future coming back to destroy a man who
saved the world from nuclear holocaust only to be met by some form of
alien who look like pepper pots with, and I quote, "eyes and
hands which look like sink plungers". The words of retired
D.S.M. Benton, I believe.
Rachel
(suprised & annoyed) What is he on about, Doctor. He's making you sound like
a real bad egg.
Doctor
(whispered, calmly) Later Rachel, later. Keep your eye on the Brigadier
Rachel
(whispered) Okay Doctor.
Brigadier
And now our
troops find you at a murder scene with an accomplass, claiming to
have seen some form of aliens to my Major!. What do you have to say
for yourself?
Doctor
Firstly, (emphasised
a la McCoy) Brigadier, I would have thought that after this length of
time and the knowledge of your forebears, that you would have a more
open and receptive mind than you appear to have. (gasps for air),
secondly, I don't know where you received your information from,
but I never mentioned anything about seeing aliens to your Major and
thirdly, (change of tone), do you have the time?
Brigadier
The time? What do you mean, have I got the time?.
Doctor
Well, my watch seems to have stopped, and I need to reset it. It must have been
the jolting of that truck on gravel.
Rachel
(confused) You said that your watch could never, OUCH!
Brigadier
Well its, let me see, fifteen forty seven hours in three, two, one
FX Click, pow, electric hum
GRAMS Dick Barton fast build up music
Doctor
(quietly) Rachel, we have forty five seconds to get out of here before the effect
wears off.
FX Chairs scrape quietly, move to door, turn handle, static shock
Rachel
(screams)
FX Body falls to the floor. Turns handle. Door opens, body pulled, door closed.
Doctor
You can get up now. It was only a little jolt.
Rachel
(stunned) What was it?
Doctor
A static shock. Now let's get out of here.
FX Running
GRAMS Continue exciting music
Rachel
Why did you want me to observe the Brigadier?
Doctor
You didn't notice anything about him?
Rachel
Something about his eyes. He made me want to water my eyes for him.
Doctor
Exactly. It's an old trick to put you off your guard. This way.
Rachel
I thought these were your friends?
Doctor
They are, or were or will be. Depends what is happening. What is happening now
though is not much good. We have to get out of here and back to that warehouse.
I have a feeling something bad is about to happen.
Rachel
(nervous) I don't like it when you say things like that. Gives me goose bumps on
my legs!.
Doctor
Don't worry. Ah, a door.
FX Stop running. Turn handle, open and close door.
GRAMS Music end
Brigadier
(with a start) Now. Doctor? Doctor?. Blast.
FX Intercom buzz
Intercom
Sir?
Brigadier
Full scale
security alert. Code red. Two hostiles on UNIT grounds. One male, red
hair, dressed like something out of a 20's play, one female, late
teens, blonde, wearing a Liverpool strip and track suite bottoms.
Consider hostile and dangerous. Shoot to kill.
GRAMS Dramatic chords. Restart movement music
Doctor
Quick, the jeep
FX Running over gravel. Starts up jeep.
Rachel
Let's get out of here.
Doctor
I agree. Keep your head down an...
Rachel
And your foot. Let's move!
FX Jeep moves off - fast!
Rachel
(screamed) Look out, that man there!.
Doctor
I'm going to hit him.
Rachel
(screams) No!. Look out!
Guard
Stop or I'll fire.
FX Gunshots, jeep swerves, gravel splatters. Jeep stops.
Guard
Get out you two. The
Brigadier say's to shoot on sight. That's what I am going to do.
FX Cocks rifle.
Doctor
(commands) Halt. As a bona fide member of UNIT and under the terms therewith and
withholding, I demand the right to a fair hearing and trial.
Rachel
(strained) What about me?
Doctor
And my companion,
being in my care, must be held until such time as my hearing and any
such sentence has been given.
Guard
(nastily) Very pretty. Alright you two, come with me. Consider yourself under
arrest.
FX Ambulance pulls up. Door opens, chair lift to ground.
Man
I'll take you into the reception. There, one of our trained personel will take
you for your pre-treatment.
FX Electric doors open.
GRAMS Annoying entrance lobby muzak.
Man
If you'll just wait here.
P.A.
Will the doctor looking after Mrs Jones please attend to her in the foyer.
Receptionist
One lump or two?
Mrs Jones
(taken aback) Eh?
Receptionist
In your tea. One lump or two?
Mrs Jones
(stutters) W,w,w,w, one thank you.
Receptionist
Milk?
Mrs Jones
Yes, please. Very nice place this.
Receptionist
I should think
so. It cost more than two million pounds on just the front, foyer and
one operating room. Proffessor Henderson is a genius.
Mrs Jones
(amazed) With some very rich backers.
Receptionist
Quite. Ah. Here is your doctor now.
Mrs Jones
Why, it's Doctor Cartwright. I would never have expected you here. Especially
after what you said about it!.
Cartwright
(voice slightly monotoned) Yes. It was a bit silly of me now. The facilities here
are unsurpassed by any I have seen before.
Mrs Jones
(amazed) Wow.
Cartwright
Now I shall take you to your room.
Mrs Jones
(a bit woozy) Thank you. I could do with a nap.
Cartwright
Don't worry about feeling tired. It is quite normal in your state. Now onto the
automated floor.
FX Buzz, traction buzz, accelerates. Stops (five seconds later).
Cartwright
And this is your room.
FX Electronic door opens, hums, closes.
Mrs Jones
A bed. Just what I need. Sleepy times now.
FX Gets out of chair, stumbles across floor, slumps on bed. Snores. Intercom ping
Cartwright
Doctor Jacobson, the patient is asleep.
Jacobson
(over intercom) Good. We shall be along in a moment.
Cartwright
Okay. Mrs Jones?
Mrs Jones?
Mrs Jones
(snoring), (stirs).
FX Vomit hitting the floor. Doors slide open. Heavy steps enter.
Cartwright
There she is.
Mrs Jones
Oh, Doctor Jacobson, thank god it's you. I don't really feel well.
Jacobson
Don't worry. Professor Henderson here will soon sort that all out, won't you.
Cyberman
Yes. Soon you shall be like us, you will ALL be like us
GRAMS Build up
FX Steps approaching
Jacobson
(consoling) Don't worry. They are our friends.
Mrs Jones
(stiffled screamed) Get them away from me. Get them away!
Cartwright
You did say you wanted to get better!
General laughter of humans, insanely.
Mrs Jones
They're too close. In the name of the Holy Ghost, get them away, (starts to
scream)
GRAMS Outro music played from over the end of the scream

GRAMS Dr. Who intro
Mrs Jones
Oh, Dr. Jacobson, thank God it's you. I don't really feel well.
Jacobson
Don't worry. Professor Henderson here will soon sort that all out, won't you.
Cyberman
Yes. Soon you shall be like us, you will ALL be like us.

Mrs Jones
(stiffled scream) Get them away from me. Get them away!
Cartwright
You did say you wanted to get better!
General laughter of humans, insanely.
Mrs Jones
They're too close. In the name of the Holy Ghost, get them away (starts to
scream)
Cyberman
To resist is useless.
FX Thump, thud. Body falls to the ground.
Cyberman
You're methods are crude. They are illogical.
Jacobson
(cynical) What do you care?. You're only here for one thing. (deadly) Gold.
Cyberman
What do you know of Gold?
Jacobson
You can't get enough of it. I have studied you, you need Gold to survive.
Cyberman
You are a fool. Come, take this human away.
FX Doors open, body dragged. Doors close. Trapse on gravel.
Guard
(commands) HALT!. Prisoner and companion, two steps, forward.
FX Two sets step forward.
Guard
HALT!. Prisoner, open door and enter.
FX Door open, feet in.
Guard
HALT!.
Sargent
What is it now Honner?
Guard
Two prisoners Sarge.
Sargent
Prisoners?
Guard
Escaped from the Brigadier's custody.
Sargent
The instruction was to shoot on sight.
Guard
Couldn't. He is a
member of UNIT, has been for years. Claims that he has the right to a
fair trial an' all.
Sarge
A wise guy eh?. Well, what have you to say?
Doctor
Any chance of a cup of tea? Or coffee?
Sarge
(scream) Silence. Wait here. I'll have to send for the Brig.
FX Door opens, steps out, door closes
Rachel
(quiet) So what happens now?
Doctor
(quiet) The Sargent
there will get the Brigadier, he'll question me, I'll tell him
some things, and then it's anyones guess.
Rachel
(quiet) Oh.
Doctor
(quiet) Either that or he'll come back and shoot the pair of us.
Rachel
(quiet, shocked) Why?
Doctor
(quiet) Let's just
say that the last time I had any dealings with UNIT, we left in
slightly, mmmm, (not sure) uneasy terms.
FX Door opens, steps in, door closes.
Brigadier
I'll take them from here.
Guard
Do you need an escort?
Brigadier
No. I am capable of taking them from here.
Guard
Yes sir. Permission to return to duty, sir.
Brigadier
Granted.
FX Stomps (attention), door opens, march out, door closes, march across gravel,
fade.
Brigadier
Now, Doctor, Rachel, go infront. Through the door and turn left.
Doctor
Have we a choice?
Brigadier
None. Now move.
FX Door opens, three sets through, door closes, feet to fade. Heavy feet to fore.
Cyberlab.
Cyber 2
The Mondasian is restless. It asks too many questions.
Cyber 3
It is confused. I shall speak to it.
FX Feet across metal floor.
Cyber 3
You have questions. After this time, it is only logical.
CM
What has happened?. I do not know you or of you, yet you are as I.
Cyber 3
Much time has passed since your Polar invasion attempt. It has been written in the
ArcHives about you. We are Cybermen, you are we.
CM
Your transformation is not logical. You have the appearance of future projections,
yet have retained the weakness of emotions.
Cyber 3
We do not have emotions. We have logic.
CM
Your logic has become perverted, you are no longer what we, the Mondasians, set
out to irradicate. You are weak.
Cyber 3
You are confused. Our logic is pure. It has been tempered with time. Time is the
limiting factor. Time and energy.
CM
You have energy. Time is beyond all but the Timelords of Galifrey. They have the
knowledge, the mastery of time and travel.
Cyber 3
What do you know of Timelords?
CM
They are known through out the galaxies as keepers of what they call "Truth".
Their truth is not our truth. They are weak. They care.
Cyber 3
To feel for others is weak. To care is weak. We are not weak. The logic is that
we do not care.
CM
Where am I?
Cyber 3
You are on board the CyberScience ship. Our earth agents rescued you. You are
safe.
CM
And the Doctor?
Cyber 3
You know the Doctor?
CM
He is a man who through logic, destroyed Mondas and stopped our invasion. He is
pure logic, yet not a cyberman.
Cyber 3
The one called the Doctor is a Gallifrayan.
FX Sparks, crackles, pops, power drone down.
CM
(slows down) Malfunction, I cannot operate, power loss. Close
FX Pop
CM
(v. slow, slurred, quiet) Malfunctioning, system shock, close down.
FX Power drain to stop.
Cyber 3
What is happening?
Cyber 2
We have solar power loss. The earth satallite is crossing the sun. Time to power
regain, two point seven.
Cyber 3
Good.
FX Door opens, steps though, door closed.
Brigadier
Sit down. Don't try any of your petty tricks. This room will nullify
any attempts to activate an aggressive or non-earthly item.
FX Chairs scrape.
Doctor
(annoyed) Look, just who do you think you are. First, you bring us here, then try
to shoot us!.
Brigadier
(strained) LET (normal) me explain, Doctor.
Doctor
Please do!
Brigadier
You are here on
sufferance. It is mildly annoying to me that you are here at all!.
Doctor
(sarcastically) You DO suprise me.
Brigadier
None the less, you do have the right to a trial. I admit that my actions may have
been a bit hasty
Rachel
(interupts) Hasty!. Listen mush, the Doctor is the only person here who knows the
first thing about those machine people back here. Without him, you'll all
die - or worse!
Doctor
Rachel, shush.
Brigadier
Elloquently stated, yet entirely wrong.
Rachel
Eh?
GRAMS Eiree quiet music
Brigadier
The Doctor here, is not the only person with knowledge of the Cybermen, or metal
people, as you put it. I too, have knowledge of them.
Rachel
You can't!.
Brigadier
But I can. You see, I am not from this miserable little planet. I originate off
the remenants of a long dead planet. A planet, which the Doctor here, destroyed.
Doctor
(taken aback) Rot!. I never destroyed a planet in my lives, to do such a thing is
aborant to every fibre of my being.
Brigadier
Then the material is growing thin.
Doctor
Unless, that is, unless you come from, no, you can't have.
Rachel
Can't have what?
Doctor
Space travel. Well, not after the dereliction of the planet by the Cyber forces.
Before, yes. After, nah.
Brigadier
The planet may not have, but our scientists had. The "tuned in" to the
Nerva Beacon transmat to Earth. I survived while you killed the rest of my planet.
Doctor
You mean Voga?
Brigadier
(hissed) Yes. Voga. The planet of Gold. Inventors of the Glitter guns, destroyer of
the Cyberwars. Voga.
Rachel
(bemused) Voga?
Doctor
Yes. It was a planet of great wealth. It traded for centuries, then it fell foul of the
Cybermen. They ripped half the planet away before it could escape.
The cybermen persued it relentlessly. Then I appeared on the scene.
Rachel
Oh.
Brigadier
Oh indeed. Now Doctor, I cannot try you for the slaughter of the inhabitents of a
different planet, but you can be tried of the lesser offence of going AWOL.
Doctor
AWOL?
Brigadier
Lethbridge Stewart wrote of a number of times you disappeared in something
called a TARDIS, without the express permission of either Geneiver or
UNIT command.
Doctor
I was, sorry, I am the scientific advisor.
GRAMS Music build up
Brigadier
You are a fool.
Doctor
(shouts) The fool is not the one who gives the advice, it is the one who recieves
then ignores the advice.
Brigadier
Advice which lead to the death of a number of service personnel.
Doctor
(heated) Service personnel who would not have died if my advice had been carried
out to the letter.
Brigadier
Doctor.
Doctor
(sharply) What?
Brigadier
I charge you with the wanton abandonment of duties, going absent without leave on a
number of occasions, abduction and being party to the death of a number of service
personnel.
Doctor
(bemused) Abduction?
Brigadier
Yes. Do you deny ever leaving in your TARDIS with either a Miss Josephine Grant,
Miss Sarah Jane Smith or Lt. Harold Sullivan RN?
Doctor
No. I mean yes. I mean they came with me of their own free will.
Brigadier
None the less, the court will hear all of this evidence. Until then, you shall be
taken from this place unto a place of detention. You will recieve all respect to
your rank.
Doctor
(frumpy) Thanks a bundle
Brigadier
(nasty) And on a personal note, I hope they throw away the key and your final
regenerations go slowly and painfully - as painfully as my exile on this little
planet has been. Sargent Williams
FX Door open, march in.
Williams
Sir?
Brigadier
Take them to the detention cells, then report back to me. They are to have twenty
four hour guards on them.
Williams
Sir. (instructs) Prisoner and companion, this way.
FX Chairs scrape, walk out.
Brigadier
Oh and Doctor.
FX March stops
Doctor
Yes?
Brigadier
Don't try anything silly.
Doctor
Like what you're doing?
Brigadier
Pardon?
FX Marching
Doctor
(away) Nothing. (laughs to fade)
FX Door closes.
Brigadier
Grey hound to trap one? Come in trap one.
Voice
(over walky talky) Trap one here.
Brigadier
Get down to the Shelfish place. See what's going on.
Voice
Will do. Over.
FX Fade to marching.
Rachel
(quiet) So what now?
Doctor
(quiet) The Brigadier has it in for me.
Rachel
(quiet, sarcastically) Tell me something I don't know.
Doctor
(quiet) Did I ever tell you of the ancient Maurinus trick of Coomancha?
Rachel
(quiet) Will it help?
Doctor
(quiet) Only if you do what I say.
Rachel
(quiet) Go on.
Doctor
(quiet) Did you see the window we passed back there?
Rachel
(quiet) Yes.
Doctor
(quiet) When I nudge you, bend down suddenly and make to tie your show lace. Stay
down until I say otherwise.
Rachel
(quiet) And if I stand up?
Doctor
(quietly sings) Good bye brain cells, I am leaving.
Rachel
(quiet) Oh.
Williams
Quiet in the ranks there. Keep moving.
Doctor
(quiet, to self) Nearly, nearly. (hissed, quiet) Rachel, now.
FX Marching stops suddenly
Williams
What are you doing down there?
Rachel
Tieing my shoelace
Doctor
Sargent Williams?
Williams
Yes?
FX Woo-woo-woo-woo-woo-woo
Doctor
(slowly) You will stop and return to the Brigadier.
Williams
(slowly) I will return.
Doctor
(slowly) You will say we are in cell H2O.
Willams
(slowly) Cell H-2-O
Doctor
(slowly) You will act normally and forget this ever happened after seeing the
Brig.
Williams
(slowly) Act and forget
Doctor
(slowly) On your way then man!
Williams
(slowly) On my way.
FX Woo-woo stops. Turns and single march away, normal pace.
Rachel
Can I get up now?
Doctor
Yes, and lets get to the window. I can hear a truck starting up. We might hitch a
lift out of this mad house!
Rachel
I'm right behind you.
FX Running, fade.
Doctor
(strained) Almost there, (grunt) that's it, we're out. Run for the truck.
FX Running across gravel. Truck starts, slowly moves off. Claxion starts
Rachel
Quick Doctor, jump for the tail gate.
Doctor
I AM trying!. Here goes.
FX Thud on tail gate. Truck thunders off.
Doctor
Made it. Now I wonder were we are off to?
Rachel
Doctor?
Doctor
Yes?
Rachel
What is that claxion for?
Doctor
The Brigadier has probably not been taken in by my elaborate bluff.
Rachel
Won't that annoy him?
Doctor
Probably (giggles)
FX Truck off gravel onto road. Claxion fades. Phone rings.
Receptionist
Shelfish Laboratories, Claire speaking. How may I help you?
Voice
It's Klieg. Put me through to Jacobson
Receptionist
Just transferring you.
FX Muted phone ring
Jacobson
(over phone) Jacobson. What's up?
Receptionist
Corporal Klieg on the line for you sir.
Jacobson
(over phone) Put him through
FX Click
Voice
(over phone) I haven't got much time, but I do have information for you.
Jacobson
(normal) Well, tell on.
Voice
(over phone) Normal terms?
Jacobson
Normal terms, plus bonus if the information is good enough.
Voice
(over phone) UNIT is on full alert. Some bloke and girl fitting your description
have just escaped.
Jacobson
Any idea where they are now?
Voice
They disappeared. Watch out though, the Brig is onto you. You should see the file
he has on Shelfish and Henderson. It's massive.
Jacobson
(intrigued) Really?
Voice
(over phone) Yeah!. I've had a squint at it and the thing goes back to before
Shelfish was even set up. There's a bit on some character called the Doctor.
Looks like a nice bloke.
Jacobson
He is a fool. A meddler who will always try his best to ruin everything for anyone -
especially us.
Voice
(over phone) Well look out for a truck heading your way. Gotta go - there's someone
coming.
FX Phone hangs up. Phone replaced. Buzzer
Jacobson
Did you get that?
Henderson
Yes, but it does not matter. Our experiment is complete. Come to the laboratory door
and press the orange button. Do not question what happens.
Jacobson
I'll be with you in a moment. May I bring Cartwright?
Henderson
Yes. He should attend. Out.
FX Buzzer
Jacobson
Doctor Cartwright to go to the main laboratory door. Wait for me there. Out.
FX Truck pulling up in middle of road, truck idles, backflap falls down. Jump down
Doctor
Okay Rachel. Walk away from the truck. We are at the back of some lab or other.
Rachel
So?
Doctor
There is something
wrong. Can't quite put my finger on it. Something about this wall.
Rachel
(semi ignored) It's a wall.
Doctor
This one isn't. Try looking at it sideways on.
Rachel
Eh?
Doctor
Look at the wall out of the corner of your eye. There is something not quite
right about the wall.
Rachel
Okay. No, no, nothing, ah!
Doctor
See what I mean?
Rachel
Yeah. It sort of shimmers at the edges.
Doctor
Rachel, I don't think this wall is here at all.
Rachel
When is a door not a door?
Doctor
Sorry?
Rachel
It's a joke. When is a door not a door?
Doctor
Go on.
Rachel
When it's ajar. This wall might be the same. Try touching it.
Doctor
No. I have a better idea.
FX Russling inside of clothes.
Doctor
My electroscope. It detects current and static. Here goes.
FX Whizzing noise. Low frequency.
Rachel
Is that good?
Doctor
No. It means that the wall is a temperal distortion.
Rachel
A temperal what?
Doctor
Distortion. It is here, but not. It is a projection of something which was
here.
Rachel
I see, or rather, not.
FX Steps, getting closer.
Doctor
Now what can be the best way through this?
GRAMS Dramatic chords,
quiet raising to cresendo when marked *. * indicates cres. level. The
more the merrier!
Rachel
Doctor?
Doctor
(ignores) I could try running at it, but I don't think it will work.
GRAMS **
FX Steps getting closer
Rachel
(getting anxious) Doctor? Doctor - hurry up.
Doctor
(ignores) It is a puzzle in logic. The wall is there but not there. This is not
logical unless the wall is there at a time when it not being there is either
starting or ended.
FX Steps stop
GRAMS ***
Rachel
(shouts) Doctor!
Doctor
(annoyed, shouts) What? Can't you see I am trying to get through this?. Now how
do I get through this wall?
Cyberman
Why don't you walk through it at an angle?
Doctor
Thank you. Walk through at an (dawning) angle. Rachel?
Rachel
(hushed) Yes Doctor?
Doctor
Is the person who answered my question about six foot six, built like a brick
outhouse and has a naturally silver complexion with an aversion to gold?
Rachel
Yes.
Doctor
Then why didn't you warn me?.
Cyberman
Doctor. You will walk straight forward. Do not stop or turn around.
Rachel
Sounds familiar.
FX Steps forward. A couple of steps, whizz-oop sound per being (3)
Cartwright
You sent for me?
Jacobson
Yes. In a moment, you will see what all of the work by Henderson and the Shelfish
laboratories has culminated in. No doubt you will be frightened by
some things in the main laboratory, but do not fear. This is the way
forward. Now step onto this plate.
FX Steps. Stop. Hollow clonk.
Jacobson
And away we go.
FX Click. Whizz-oop (2). Metal door opens.
Henderson
Doctors Jacobson and Cartwright. You are priveliged to be the first non altered
humans to see the inner sanctum of our work.
Cartwright
Is this where our patients went?
Henderson
Yes. They were here. They are now all back out in the community. When the signal is
given, they will become active to our commands. Their strength will become ours.
FX Struggle in the background.
Cyber 3
Why have you brought these two into our laborartory?
Cyber 4
It is the Doctor and his companion. They were seen on my cameras. The controller
should be told.
Cyber 3
The controller is busy. Put them by the Mondasian.
Cyber 4
I obey. You will go to the Mondasian. Move.
Rachel
The Mondasian? What's that?
Doctor
They mean the other Cyberman over there.
FX Steps on a metal floor.
Doctor
(fascinated) A Mondasian. I haven't seen one of those since 1986 at the South
Pole!.
Rachel
Is it dangerous?
Doctor
Not really. The Cyber Mondasians need power. Originally, it was from Mondas. Now,
it looks like it has the power from the Cybermen's own plant.
Rachel
Why is it so different?
Doctor
Evolution?. Need?. I don't know or particularly care. What we must do is get out
of here and quick. First, let's see what can be done with a little bit of
metal!
Rachel
Doctor!.
FX Clicks of metal against metal.
Doctor
That should give it a bit of a head ache. Now for escape.
Cyber 3
Controller?
Henderson
Yes?
Cyber 3
We have the Doctor.
Henderson
I shall be with you in a minute. Let me finish off here.
Jacobson
I believe you said something about your experiments being over?
Henderson
Yes. For many years, we have had an allergy to Gold. It has cost us many of our
warriors lives. Now, with your help, we have over come our aversion to Gold.
Cartwright
How?
Henderson
The human lung and circulatory system does not have a problem with many substances,
including Gold. We have adapted them for our needs.
Cartwright
How will that help you?
Henderson
We will now be the ultimate survivors. Nothing can stop the Cybermen now. Meet the
newest form of the Cyber-race.
FX Door opens. Heavy human steps enter.
Cartwright
(startled) Mrs Jones!.
Mrs Jones
(normal) Yes. You had no faith in the Henderson treatment did you. For that, you
should die.
FX Gun cocks, laser fires. Explode as shot. Body falls.
Jacobson
(shocked) Why did you do that?
Henderson
He posed a threat. Your control was faltering. The man had to go. Now you will
see how the changes are made.
Jacobson
I don't think I want to.
Henderson
You have no choice. Follow me.

Doctor

FX Frequency decreases. Stops
Henderson
What has happened?
Cyber 2
The power has dropped again Controller.
Henderson
Again?
Cyber 3
Yes Controller. The levels dropped while we were conducting experiments on the
Mondasian.
FX Quiet steps. Locks click.
Jacobson
(quickly and quietly) Rachel. Rachel, wake up.
Rachel
(groggy) Urgh.
Jacobson
Come on, we have to get you out of here.
Rachel
(groggy) I can't walk.
Jacobson
Take a few breaths in.
FX Breaths
Jacobson
Better?
Rachel
No.
Jacobson
Good. Now get out of here.
Rachel
How? And what about the Doctor?
Jacobson
Don't worry about him. Go and hide by those crates.
Rachel
Okay. You sure about the Doctor?
Jacobson
Trust me.
Rachel
Were have I heard that before?
FX Quiet steps to fade.
Cyber 2
The power is restoring.
Henderson
Good. Now we will resume the conversions.
FX Steps to fore.
Henderson
Power the cyber-convertor back up. To full.
FX Power resumes, high frequency oscillation
Doctor
(screams) Ahhhhhhh!
Henderson
Wait.
FX Power down
Henderson
Where is the girl?
Jacobson
I don't know.
Henderson
You lie.
Jacobson
I have no reason to do such a thing
Henderson
What you say is of no importance. I saw the girl recognised you.
Jacobson
She was a student of mine at Ipswich university. I had her in Human Biology.
Henderson
A place of learning?
Jacobson
(dejectedly) It was.
FX BIG Crash
Cyber 2
(over intercom) Controller, controller?
Henderson
Yes?
Cyber 2
The Mondasian has escaped.
Henderson
What?
Cyber 2
When the power was dropped, a short circuit occured. The Mondasian was repowered
and escaped.
Henderson
He will not get far. Release the Cybermats
Cyber 3
You cannot do that.
Henderson
Release the Cybermats. That is an order.
Cyber 3
No. It is illogical.
Henderson
Illogical?. Do you question an order?
Cyber 3
The Cybermats are programmed not to attack any other cyberman. They have a
blocker on Cyber brain waves.
FX Body slumps
Jacobson
What was that?
Cyber 2
The Doctor has collapsed.
Henderson
It is of no importance. The Mondasian must be found and destroyed.
FX Heavy stomps, various wails, varied pitch.
Cyber 2
We have found the Mondasi (cut off)
FX Small explosion
Henderson
What has happened?
Jacobson
Looks like you have problems with the in-laws!. (laughs)
Henderson
Silence. The Mondasian must be stopped.
FX Heavy steps to fade. Light steps to fore.
Jacobson
Now to get you free, Doctor. Then away from this place.
FX Click, body falls to the floor. Body pulled across floor.
Jacobson
(out of breath) There. (calls quietly) Rachel? Rachel?. Get over here, come on.
(urgently) Before they get back - come on girl!.
FX Quiet steps to fore.
Rachel
(shocked) What have they done to the Doctor?. He looks terrible. He looks, like,
like
Jacobson
(suggests) The start of a Cyberman?. We must get you out of here.
Rachel
What about you?
Jacobson
Don't worry about me. My work is not over here yet. There is a slight problem to
deal with.
Rachel
Now to get out.
Jacobson
How do you suggest this?
Rachel
I found some empty crates. Looked like the ones from that warehouse.
Jacobson
That'll do. Help me with the Doctor
Rachel
Are you sure we should move him?
Jacobson
Any better ideas?
Rachel
(dejectedly) No.
Jacobson
Shut up then and help me move him.
FX Body pulled along floor. Crate opened. Body heaved into crate. Crate
closed.
Rachel
I just have one question
Jacobson
(anxious) What?
Rachel
Why the Cybermen?
Jacobson
A very large laboratory and a larger research grant.
Rachel
(cynically) The root of all evil - money.
Jacobson
(annoyed) Shush and get in.
FX Crate opened and closed. Steps away and fore. Heavy steps in.
Jacobson
(smuggly) And your Mondasian?
Henderson
Still at large. It has ruined our communciations equipment.
Jacobson
Does that alter your invasion?
Henderson
No. It did not damage the transponders.
Jacobson
(miffed) Oh.
Henderson
There is still much work to be done. You have seen in here and must now be either
destroyed or made into one of us.
Jacobson
(annoyed) What?. That was never the deal!.
Henderson
Cybermen do not make deals. Such an idea is affable.
Jacobson
(scared) I will be better as I am.
Henderson
Explain.
Jacobson
As a Cyberman, I will not be as useful in research and keeping UNIT away as I am
now.
Henderson
True. Yet as a Cyberman, you would be a great asset. Your mind would not need much
conditioning and the human emotion weakness is not present.
Jacobson
So?
Henderson
YOU WILL BE AS US.
FX Laser build up. Explode as shot. Body falls to floor. Truck. Bumpy road. Crate
opens.
Rachel
(relieved) Phew!. That was stuffy. (realises) The Doctor.
FX Out of crate. Opens crate.
Rachel
Doctor? Doctor? Can you hear me? (upset, cries) Doctor, wake up.
FX Rustle of clothes.
Doctor
(groans)
Rachel
(relief) Doctor?. Doctor, you're alright.
FX Sits up
Doctor
(Hartnell) Alright? Alright? Of course I'm alright young woman. Now stop fussing
so.
FX Falls down.
Rachel
Doctor, you're talking gibberish. Come on, (pleads) Doc....
FX Sits up
Doctor
(Troughton) Gibberish, my dear Zoe, is just a way to be wrong with authority.
Rachel
Who's Zoe?
Doctor
(coldly) We are the Cybermen. We ARE logic.
FX Falls down
Doctor
(very weakly) Rachel. Come close.
FX Slight movement
Rachel
Go on
Doctor
(weakly). Get me to the TARDIS. The TARDIS or the Brigadier. He will know what to
do.
Rachel
The Brigadier?. He'd kill you as soon as look at you.
Doctor
Give him this. He will know what to do with it (fades out towards the end of
sentence)
Rachel
(sobs quietly).
FX Truck slows. Heavy doors open. Truck drives in.
Rachel
Must hide.
FX Crates close. Truck stops. Crane.
Man
Over the top with these, 'Arry. Dunt matter where you lobs 'em
FX Crates crash to ground. Explosion. Cyber-convertor oscillations
Henderson
The Mondasian is causing us some problems
Cyber 3
It will be dealt with Controller.
Henderson
Jacobson will soon be ours. Then the girl, the Doctor and finally, the Earth.
Cyber 2
Agent Klieg has contacted us.
Henderson
What does he say?
Cyber 2
UNIT have a dosier on us.
Henderson
That is to be expected.
Cyber 2
They know about us, Shelfish and the hospital
Henderson
How can they know this?
Cyber 3
The Doctor must have told them.
Henderson
No. We have tracked the Doctor for the past thirty Earth years. He could not have
told them of us.
Cyber 2
There is no other explaination, Controller.
FX Cyber-convertor powers down. Lock opens automatically. Heavy steps out.
Henderson
There must be.
Jacobson
(cyberman) The Brigadier knows.
Henderson
How could he know?
Jacobson
He is not of this planet. Klieg knows of this. He is a threat.
Henderson
How do you know this?
Jacobson
Who do you think employed Klieg then sent him to UNIT?
Cyber 2
This would explain a great deal.
Cyber 3
Why?
Jacobson
He is from Voga.
Henderson
The Gold planet. He must have escaped.
Cyber 3
This accounts for the glitter guns. He must be destroyed.
Jacobson
I shall go.
FX Steps fade. Whoop. Heavy doors open. Steps run out. Telephone box door opens,
reciever lifted, operator dialled.
Rachel
Hello, operator?. Can you put me through to UNIT HQ, Brigadier Lemmington, reversed
charges? Thanks. (waits) Hello, Brigadier?
Brigadier
(over phone) Yes. Who is this?
Rachel
It's Rachel, the Doctor's friend.
Brigadier
You are in serious trouble.
Rachel
(bored, taunted) Yeah, go on. AWOL or something.
Brigadier
Yes, or something.
Rachel
Look. The Doctor is ill. We are at the warehouse you originally found us in.
Help!.
Brigadier
Help?. Why should we help?
Rachel
We know about the Cybermen's plans. Besides, the Doctor is still on trial and is
still UNIT's scientific advisor. If you leave him, you will be responsible for
his death - without cause.
Brigadier
Okay. I'll send a jeep. Now is there anything else?
Rachel
No. Just hurry. I don't think that this place will be free of our silver friends
for very much longer.
FX Phone replaced. Cyber laboratory.
Cyber 2
Mondasian?
CM
(voice distorted) What do you want?
Cyber 3
You are trapped. We want to help.
CM
Help? Help?. You want to help?
Cyber 2
Yes.
CM
Such a process is illogical. If one is injured through battle, it is lost. Help
is not given or recieved. Help is a weakness
Cyber 3
We know of your problem
CM
I have no problem
Cyber 2
You do not know what is happening.
CM
I know that I have to irradicate your weakness.
Cyber 3
Irradicate? How?
CM
By this.
FX Two loud pops. Cyber falls to floor.
CM
They have weakness. I will alter them.
FX High speed dentist drill. Clunk. Unclunk, drill - twice.
CM
They are converted. Do you still want to help me?
Cyber 3
(voice modulated as CM) Help? Why should I help? I do not understand.
CM
And you?
Cyber 2
(voice as Cyber 3) To help is to waste time. Time is precious. Time is life.
CM
Then we should irradicate the Controller. It is weak. It feels.
Cyber 2 & 3
Irradicate the Controller. Irradicate, irradicate.
FX Jeep pulls up
Major
(calls, distant) Miss Rachel, Miss Rachel?
Rachel
Over here.
Major
Can you get to the door?
Rachel
Not with the Doctor like this. Help me.
FX Jeep starts. Drives to fore. Stops
Major
Let me help you up with him.
Rachel
Thanks.
FX Body being lifted, grunts etc., flopped into jeep.
Rachel
Now let's get out of here.
FX Jeep skids, drives away, to fore. Stops
Rachel
(scared) What have you stopped for?
Major
That. It's one of those Cyber things.
Rachel
So, put your foot down. I think our chances in four tonnes of high speed metal are
better than one Cybermen!.
Major
Wilko.
FX Jeep revs us, speed off. Distant crash (metal on metal) then crash (metal on
brick), jeep carries on.
Rachel
That was close.
Major
So what happened back there to the Doctor?
Rachel
(exasperated) It's a long, long story.
FX Jeep to fade. Fade in Cyber laboratory.
Henderson
It is not logical that after the years, you should be in command of the
Cybership. You are confused.
CM
Why should it not be logical?. You are not fit to command. You sent your troops
to give help.
Henderson
They were sent as a trap.
CM
Traps are not required. All things yield to logic, that is what the Cyber-race
was built on. That and survival.
Henderson
You are weak. You require our power to live. Without our power, you cannot
survive.
CM
Again, you show your illogical stance. You threaten. You talk. To do such a thing
wastes time. Subjugation is not required, we are the Cybermen, we rule by power.
Henderson
I do not have to take this from an ancestor, brought back from the dead as a play
thing. Guards, crush the Mondasian
FX Lasers cock and warm up.
Henderson
Why do you point your weapons at me?. I am your Controller.
Cyber 2
You are no longer our Controller.
Cyber 3
The Mondasian is our Leader.
Henderson
Leader?. Leader?. This is mutiny. I order you to destroy the Mondasian.
Cyber 2
We obey the Mondasian. You will immobilise yourself.
Henderson
To do so would make me vulnerable.
Cyber 3
Do that or you will be the one destroyed.
Henderson
Mondasian, what have you done to my troops?
CM
They have had theweaknesses removed. They are now governed by the purest of
logic. I am now their leader. Destroy him.
FX Lasers shoot, explode as fired. Various explosions.
Henderson
(screams, in pain, very strained) I must survive.
FX Heavy thud on floor. Jeep fade in.
Major
So it was Doctor Jacobson who rescued you?
Rachel
Yes. He was my old Human Biology lecturer at Ipswich Uni.
Major
(suprised) And I had him down as a bad egg.
FX Jeep slows to stop.
Guard
(commands) UNIT halt or I shall fire.
Major
Let us through. It's me and two passengers.
Guard
Come forward and be recognised.
FX Steps.
Guard
Oh it's you. Okay sir, go straight through. The Brigadier is expecting you.
Major
Thanks
FX Steps, jeep carries on onto gravel, slowly. Drives, comes to a halt.
Major
(bus inspector style) All out that's getting out. Next stop, Blackpool North Pier
(sniggers to self).
FX Out of jeep.
Rachel
Help me with the Doctor then.
FX Grunts, door opens, closes.
Corporal
The Brigadier says to go through to Conferance room 3.
Major
Thank you.
FX Steps to fade. Steps to fade in. Door opens, closes
Brigadier
Put him on the table.
Rachel
He's ill. Help him.
Brigadier
Major Strife, you may leave us.
Major
Sir.
FX Steps, door opens, closes.
Brigadier
(angrily) Why should I help the man who destroyed MY planet.
Rachel
I don't know. He said to give you this. Said you'll know what to do with it.
Brigadier
A time player. Been a long time since I saw one of these.
FX Click. Buzz. Fast forward/high speed play tape. Buzz. Click
Rachel
Well?
Brigadier
It certainly paints a different picture. Voga is still there, in orbit around
Jupiter. Looks like they have been trading for a good ten years with Telos rebels
against the Cybermen who invaded.
Rachel
(hopeful) So you'll help.
Brigadier
(thinks) Yes.
Rachel
(relieved) Good.
Brigadier
(interupts) On one condition. You promise that he takes me back to Voga on the
day I left.
Rachel
He will. I'll see to that.
Brigadier
Right. Prop his head up. Wait here.
FX Intercom buzz.
Brigadier
Major Strife?
Major
(over intercom) Sir.
Brigadier
Go into my office
and behind the portrait of Lethbridge Stewart you will find a small
bottle of Gin. Bring it here.
Major
Is it wise to be drinking this time of the morning?
Brigadier
Do not question my orders. The Doctor prescribed it.
Rachel
Very droll!.
FX Cyber laboratory
CM
The Controller had set up a number of Cyberhumans. They are to be destroyed.
Humans are weak. They feel and care. They are of no use to us.
Cyber 2
There is a destruct button on the console. This will cause the Cyber parts to
attack the human parts and utterly destroy the organic material.
Cyber 3
The Cyber material will then self destruct.
CM
What is the purpose of your mission.
Cyber 2
We are to discover a cure for our problem with Gold.
CM
Has this been solved?
Cyber 3
Yes Leader. We are using human lungs. Their breathing systems are not adversly
influenced by Gold.
Cyber 2
There is a problem with Earth lungs.
CM
Explain
Cyber 3
They have become damaged by mankinds own air destruction.
CM
I do not understand why you have done this. I have no problem with Gold.
Cyber 2
Then what has happened with us?
CM
That I cannot explain.
Jacobson
(injured) I can. Assistance is required. My internal structures are damaged.
CM
We do not give assistance. Your information will be unreliable. You are still
mainly human. I can detect your hatred for me.
Jacobson
(injured, stammers while speaks) The Gold problem was due to the years of exile
on Telos and a great war with the Varrn and the Daleks. You ran short of materials
and synthesised a new plastic immune to Dalek fire power and the Varrn's fire
shots.
Cyber 2
The Cyberhuman is telling the truth.
CM
Destroy him.
FX Laser warm up.
Jacobson
(quicker, short of breath) The Cyber scientists thought they had cracked the
problem but was unaware that gold had the correct structure to coat the plastic
due to the static built up and stick. They had not tested the material against
gold before it was adopted as the new Cyber apperatus.
CM
Destroy him
Jacobson
(cries) Yes, destroy me. I have betrayed my own kind. I have help murder them for
a hand full of, of, of, (shouts) GOLD!. (laughs)
FX Explode as shot. Body flops.
Cyber 3
Remove them both. We have new plans.
FX Door opens. Steps in.
Major
The gin, Sir.
Brigadier
Thank you. Dismissed.
FX Steps, open close.
Rachel
What now?
Brigadier
We must give him this. It is a Molybdenum-Gold complex which should restore him
back to health.
Rachel
But he is unconcious.
Brigadier
(amazed). Didn't they teach you anything?. Swallowing is a reflex action.
Watch.
FX Glug, swallows. Spits.
Doctor
Blek! I knew that stuff was bad, but not THAT bad!.
Rachel
(relieved) Doctor, you're alright.
Doctor
'Course I'm alright Polly. Now we must get back to Shelfish.
Brigadier
Welcome back Doctor.
Doctor
I can take it that you watched the vidi-cube.
Brigadier
Yes, and I owe you an apology.
Doctor
No time for that. I need a hand full of your best men, a pile of glitter guns,
some smoke grenades and a chess board. (slyly) I'll teach those plastic idiots
something about logic.
Brigadier
You have a plan?
Doctor
Yes I do. This time they'll wish they had never tried it on with the Doctor and
his friends. Victoria?
Rachel
Doctor?
Doctor
Get Ben and Jamie. Tell them to meet me outside the TARDIS. I have a job for those
two lay-abouts. Oh and Susan?
Rachel
Doctor?
Doctor
Do have a hair cut. You look most unbecoming for a Victorian lady!.
Brigadier
(aside) Don't worry. It may take a while for his brain to become normalised.
Doctor
You Lethbridge Stewart. Arm the men and go to the Shelfish place. On no accounts
enter. Come on Liz, we must go.
FX Jumps off table. Walks into door.
Doctor
Ouch!.
FX Door open close. Steps to fade.
Brigadier
Strife. Get the C team together. (circus style). It's showtime!!
FX Highstreet noises. Steps.
Doctor
Right. This is where you get off.
Rachel
(amazed) Off?
Doctor
Yes. I don't want you getting hurt.
Rachel
Me, a scouser. Hurt by those rubber coated robots? Nahhh.
Doctor
On your own head then.
Rachel
So what are you going to do?.
Doctor
I'll send in the Brigadier and his men through the front, while I
Rachel
(corrects) We
Doctor
(corrects) I go through the front.
Rachel
So what do I do?
Doctor
Go to the warehouse. Make sure that no Cybermen get through that way. You will
find a glitter gun behind a crate which I threw when the Major picked me up.
Rachel
Right-o. I'll leave you here then.
FX Set of steps fade. Pedestrian crossing bleeper.
Doctor
Ah, a lift. Trust UNIT to be there when wanted.
FX Jeep door opens and closes. Drives off (fade) (bring back). Stops
Doctor
So you are sure what to do?
Brigadier
Our men stay in the foyer and make sure no one enters or leaves. A small number
will position themselves at the back wall and destroy anything that appears from
a brick wall. Are you sure you feel alright?
Doctor
I've never felt better. Now off you go. I'll take the men around the back.
FX Door opens.
Doctor
Men, follow me. Double time, around the back. GO!.
FX Four sets, boots double time, fade.
Brigadier
On the mark, the rest of you will enter. No one in, no one out. Anyone leaving
must be shot. Do not engage the enemy, the special weapons should only be used on
my order. Now go.
FX Truck door open, jumps out. Foyer doors open, run through, closes.
Brigadier
Stay frosty men. (to self) Good luck Doctor.
FX (fade in) boots halt.
Doctor
You lot, find somewhere to hide. Make sure you can see all around. If you see
anything silver come through that wall, fire the special weapons at it. Do not
use your rifles, the rounds will just bounce off them. Stay alert. I'm going in.
FX Runs, whoop.
Cyber 2
We are under attack. The foyer is full of UNIT men.
CM
Send out the Cyberguards. They will not fire at their own kind.
Cyber 2
Should I go with them?
CM
Yes.
Cyber 3
I have seen the Doctor. He will be here soon.
CM
Prepare a welcome. Put the ship on stand by for invasion.
Cyber 3
I understand Leader.
FX Heavy steps away.
Cyber 2
(over intercom, back round firing). Leader.
CM
Yes.
Cyber 2
The UNIT men are attacking and killing the guards. I request back up.
CM
I shall send them.
FX Buzzer
CM
Send one dispatch group to the Earth Foyer. Crush all resistance.
Cyber 3
The Doctor is here. I shall bring him in.
CM
Is he armed?
Doctor
(struggling) Me, armed?. Never.
CM
You are the Doctor?. I do not remember you like this.
Doctor
No, I've changed a bit since then.
CM
I see your brain, you are the Doctor. I am told you are a sworn enemy of the
Cyber-race. You were responsible for my planet's destruction.
Doctor
No, your own kind destroyed Mondas. Over loaded it with power, if I remember.
CM
Now you will be destroyed.
Doctor
Now, now. I think you should look at your monitor.
Cyber 3
Something is going wrong.
FX Lasers, explode as shot. Bodies falling to ground. Gun fire.
Brigadier
(muffled, over clearish comms system) Hold fire.
FX Firing ceases.
Brigadier
At three, fire the special weapons. One, Two, Three, FIRE
FX Gentle tinkle.
Cybermen
(screaming in agony).
Brigadier
Keep an eye on the doors.
FX Buzz stops.
Doctor
You see, your attempts to defeat gold have failed.
Cyber 3
They have not failed.
CM
Then why do our troops die?
Doctor
Mankind is a resourceful bunch. Always finding better ways to kill each other, or
anything else for that matter. They have "played" with the gold!.
Cyber 3
That will not help you. You are trapped.
Doctor
Your logic is impecable. Now, who's for a game of chess?
CM
A game of logic.
Doctor
The purest sort. Let's make it interesting.
CM
Interesting?. Do you mean to bargain?. Such notions hold no meaning to the
Cybermen.
Doctor
This one will. If I win, you leave this planet alone. You go, in peace, to a new
planet. There, you do what you want.
CM
And if we win?
Doctor
The Earth and it's people are yours. Shall we begin?. You to start.
GRAMS Dramatic chords.
Rachel
(hollow) Hello?. Anyone in here? Hello?
FX Cautious steps, echos.
Rachel
Now where is the gun? The Doctor said something about behind a crate.
FX Steps
Henderson
(injured, but sudden) Are you looking for this?
Rachel
(shocked) Professor Henderson!. How did you get here?
Henderson
I have my ways. You are now my prisoner.
Rachel
(strongly). Me a prisoner of Mr Rubber Boot Man. Ha.
Henderson
Why do you laugh?
Rachel
The state you are in, you couldn't take a condemmed man prisoner!. Let me help
you.
Henderson
Cybermen do not need help. It is a weakness.
Rachel
Alright then. By the look of the foam coming from your chest panel, you won't be
here much longer anyway. (whistles). Now let me help you.
Henderson
No.
FX Sparks, small explosions.
Rachel
(screams) Let me help.
Henderson
Never. Survive, I must survive.
FX Loud explosion. Gurgle.
Rachel
(scared) Are you alright? Hello?
FX Steps closer.
Rachel
Are you okay? Are you
FX Clank
Rachel
(screams) You never die.
Henderson
No, but you will.
FX KAPOW! Body falls to the floor.
Henderson
Now to drain her life force. I will survive, but she will die.
GRAMS Dramatic Chords
Brigadier
Alright men, hang fire. You two, go around the back of the reception desk. You
and you, to the side of that far door. You, cover the enterance. I shall stay
here. Cover that wall and door, now move.
FX Running, various lengths, stops. Cocking of weapons.
Brigadier
I just hope the Doctor knows what he is doing.
GRAMS Build up music
CM
You will lose in four moves Doctor. Then, I shall take this planet.
Cyber 3
Leader, the UNIT people are holding defensive positons in the foyer. We cannot
escape. The only escape will be through the Trans-Wall.
CM
We do not need to escape. The Doctor will lose. His logic is weakening. Defeat
will be inevitable.
FX Chess piece moves.
Doctor
Your move.
CM
Two moves to death Doctor.
FX Chess piece moves.
Doctor
I think not, Mondasian.
FX Chess piece moves.
Doctor
Check, I think.
CM
That cannot be. You have not been logical in that move. You are cheating.
Doctor
(afronted) I never cheat. I have done something you Cybermen would consider weak,
sacrifice of the Leader for the better of their kind. And you are still in
check.
Cyber 3
Leader, our sensors show the Controller is still living.
CM
Do not disturb me. Destroy the Controller.
FX Piece moves.

(afronted) A species which is more logical than a species based on logic is NEVER
inferior. Now leave.
FX Weapon cocked.
Cyber 4
Should I kill him now?
CM
No. Release him. He deserves to live.
FX Wumph.
CM
Activate the Cyber-humans.
FX Mains hum. Hospital noises.
Receptionist
No, I'm afraid that Doctor Jacobson and Cartwright are no longer with us
FX High pitched noise.
Receptionist
(disembodied) I obey. Destroy the humans.
FX Chair scrapes, slowly walk off.
Brigadier
Doctor, what has happened?
Doctor
They're insane. I fear that the cybermen are about to do something very daft -
daft and dangerous. They will activate the Cyber humans.
Brigadier
So?
Doctor
When they do so, you'll have a mass of very strong, bullet resistant and throughly
evil people walking this country, destroying all those in their paths.
Brigadier
What can we do?
Doctor
Storm the building, what else!. Take five crack shots to that door, press the
orange button and then expect anything. I'm going after Rachel.
Brigadier
You heard the Doctor, move.
FX Running. Stops. Buzz, Wumph!
Brigadier
Move out, destroy any Cybermen with the special weapons, then meet back here.
FX Running off, to fade. Heavy door creaking open. Motor running in the background
Doctor
(calls, echo) Rachel, Rachel my girl. Where can she be?. Rachel, (sharply) Rachel,
answer me. (annoyed) Rach (stops).
FX Running, stops.
Doctor
(concerned/worried) Rachel, what have they done. I must get you back to the
TARDIS.
FX Drags to the jeep. Drives off. Fades to distance, brings to fore. Screams to a
halt. Yale lock opening. Door opens, drags through door. TARDIS console room hum
Doctor
(almost crying) Rachel, wake up. (cries out) NO!. They are responsible. They will
pay. (vengeful) Now to do what should have been done centuries ago - Cyber
irradication.
FX TARDIS take off. TARDIS lands. Cyber laboratory. Door opens. Faint crashes,
tinkles and Cyber screams.
Doctor
(shouts) Mondasian, you're time is numbered. I press this switch and your power
goes. Then one minute later, your whole Earthly empire goes. It will be as if you
where never here.
CM
No. No. No.
Doctor
(evil, hissed) Yes, yes, yes. You have killed one of my close friends, your race
has reeked destruction on places and people through-out time. That is a crime to
which (staccato) YOU MUST PAY.
FX Click, power down. Heavy fall to the floor. Clock counter clicks
Doctor
(calls) Brigadier, Brigadier.
FX Running. Stops
Brigadier
(puffed) Yes Doctor
Doctor
Get your men here. The place will blow in about forty seconds.
Brigadier
Calling all UNIT personnel. Disengage the enemy and get to the main laboratory. I
repeat, disengage and get to the main laboratory, at the double.
FX Running.
Doctor
Right, all here? Yes? Good. Now into the TARDIS. This place will go in about 10
seconds.
FX Doors close. TARDIS takes off as massive explosions. Hospital noises
Receptionist
I must kill, I must kill, I must, hanargh.
FX Body falls to the floor. TARDIS lands. Door opens. Men disembark.
Doctor
Well Brigadier, this is the parting of the ways, I think. I have to tend Rachel.
She needs help and Galifrey is the only place that has the facilities.
Brigadier
She promised that you would take me to Voga.
Doctor
A promise is a promise. I shall return soon and take you back.
Brigadier
Well mind you do. By the way, why are you not upset about Lethbridge Stewart.
Doctor
(laughs) It was a lie. I have lunch with him tomorrow!. (laughs)
GRAMS Theme music outro plays into laughter.
